Chapter 8
The interview room was cold, dim and disgusting. I sat alone in a graffiti-carved old table a dusty light hung directly above me. There was a two-way mirror to my right there was no other window of sort in the tiny room. I sat and wondered why I was there instead of being in a holding tank waiting for Marcie to post bail. Hell, I haven’t even been booked in years nor had my rights been read. With my head throbbing and a runny nose, I pulled my sleeves over my hands for warmth, wiped my snot and laid my face on my arm that stretched across the table. Minutes later two detectives entered the room. Both African-Americans and both seem to be in their early thirties took positions with one on each side of me. My head hurt too bad to sit up so I barely eyed the one who started to speak. “Mr. Hunt, this is my partner Dt. Williams and I am Dt. Jones. We want to ask you a few questions.” About what?” I asked without looking in his directions.” Sit up son.” The other detective asked in a stern voice. Without sitting up I asked “what the hell ya’ll want, man? Shit I just got out of the hospital today. You see these stitches in my head, shit my head hurt, so what’s up? I lifted my head up just to show the scar but laid it back down. That’s when detective Williams slammed a manila folder down and inch from my face like a fly swatter making me jump out of my seat. “What the fuck man, you almost hit me with that shit! What’s wrong with you?” He didn’t care. He just slapped me in the back of my head until I finally rose to my feet. “How’s your head feeling now, huh?” I blocked and dodged several more slaps from him before he had me pinned up against the two way mirror. I didn’t want to hit a cop but if he didn’t stop I just might. “Williams! “That’s enough.” Detective Jones spoke. “Sit down kid.” I stood against the mirror giving Williams a stare down. He matched me. “Williams, go get him a couple of aspirins.” “Sure.” Williams left the room. I let out sigh of relief. Have a seat.” I sat down massaging my head. Man what’s up with you boy? What the hell did I do to him?” “Look, he’s just pissed about two people getting killed three nights ago. One of them happened to be a high school football star for Classen and truthfully I’m pissed off too. Here, take a look. “He open the folder that Williams put on the table. It had photos of two deceased young black males shot several times in the head. I squirmed at the sight of it. I looked away and swallowed my “throw up.” Look, I don’t know who they are and I don’t know how they ended up that way.
